The Old Order Changeth

By now, you've probably heard what CBS is doing with their late night slots after Stephen Colbert concludes his run there. Basically, they're letting Byron Allen rent the time slots, they'll broadcast his programming and he'll sell commercial time in his shows. CBS makes money because Allen is taking the financial risk. He will presumably make money because the shows he'll put on cost way less than Colbert's. If this is the future of CBS, it's going to be filled with a lot of inexpensive programming. Winning in the ratings — or winning awards or praise — won't matter just as long as the parent company shows a profit.

I find that kinda depressing in a way. But then, the day is long past when "television" mostly meant CBS, NBC and ABC.

The interesting question here is would they lease that or any other time slot to someone who'd pay to put on a show with Liberal views? Would they have given the same deal to some entrepreneur who wanted to assume the financial risk of keeping Colbert there? I think we know the answer.
