I have occasionally raved here about a live stage show called Celebrity Autobiography that I've seen several times at different venues in Los Angeles. In case you doubt me, I can be seen raving here, here and here.

Basically, it's a show where some famous funny people — and the lineup of them keeps changing — read verbatim from autobiographies by other famous people and…well, here. This will explain it way better than I ever could…

When I was in New York a few weeks ago, I was pleased to see that an on-Broadway production of it was about to begin a limited run at the Shubert Theatre. And now I'm sad that the limited run will be more limited than they planned. It's closing this coming Sunday instead of, as originally announced, August 16.

Every time I saw it, it was hilarious but I guess that it's too "small" a show for its venue. The Shubert seats 1,128. Also, there's a lot of spectacle to be seen on Broadway these days because, presumably, that's what ticket buyers crave. Celebrity Autobiography is just people standing on a bare stage in front of microphones, reading.  For $129 a seat if you want to sit up close.

I assume/hope it will go back to playing smaller rooms that aren't competing directly with Wicked and Ragtime. If one of those smaller rooms is somewhere near you, go. You'll have a very good time.
