Jack Paar hosted The Tonight Show from July 29, 1957 until March 30, 1962. He was replaced — but not immediately — by Johnny Carson, who began his marathon run on October 1, 1962. The interim period was filled with rotating guest hosts because Carson's contract to host a game show on ABC hadn't expired and he couldn't assume the reins of The Tonight Show until it did.
A lot of people think Paar disappeared from television after his last Tonight Show. Not true. He took a few months off and then came right back on NBC with a once-a-week hour-long show on Friday nights at 10 PM. The Jack Paar Program debuted on September 21, 1962 so he was back on the air before Johnny took over his old job.
Paar's prime-time show was pretty much the same thing he did in late night but instead of five 105 minute shows each week, he was doing a one hour show once a week. He even taped it in the NBC building in Studio 6A, right across the hall from 6B where he'd done The Tonight Show and it ran for three years. I have found that frequently, people who think they're remembering something from Paar's Tonight Show are actually remembering something from the Friday night at 10 PM show.
