Today on Stu's Show!

Today, acting legend Ed Asner pays a return visit to Stu's Show. The last time he was on was one of the most fascinating interviews Stu Shostak has ever done and they barely scratched the surface of Mr. Asner's long, impressive career. Today, they resume scratching. A lot of folks don't know how much else this man has done in his life besides play Lou Grant and hate spunk.

You can listen live (and for free!) to their two-hour conversation (which might run over that length) by going to the Stu's Show website at the appropriate time. What time is appropriate will depend on where you live but if you're on the West Coast, it all starts at 4 PM. So I guess that means on the East Coast, it's 7 PM and other time zones have other times that you can probably figure out based on what I've told you.

If you can't listen live, wait an hour or so after the broadcast is over, then go to that website and download it as a podcast…which will only cost you a scant 99 cents. And for better value while you're there, download four shows total from Stu's extensive library and the checkout page will only charge you for three. How can they do it?

Today's Stu's Show!

Stu Shostak has a great guest today on Stu's Show. It's Joey Luft, the son of the legendary Judy Garland. You probably haven't heard him interviewed because he doesn't do it very often. He'll be discussing his mother's variety show (on which he made his TV debut) and her life and career, as well as what it's like to grow up with such a famous parent. Sounds like quite a show.

You can hear each episode of Stu's Show when it's first broadcast at 4 PM Pacific time which is 7 PM on the East Coast . You Central Time Zoners can figure out the time wherever you are. Listen to it at the Stu's Show website. And if you miss it, fear not. At that same site, you can download the show in MP3 for 99 cents…the best bargain on the 'net. But wait! It gets better. Select four past Stu's Show episodes from the archives and pay for three. What the heck are you waiting for?

Inside Marx Manor

Back in this here post, I said complimentary things about Raised Eyebrows, a book by a gent named Steve Stoliar. Steve worked for several years for Dr. Hugo Z. Hackenbush, more commonly known as Julius H. Marx, even more commonly known as Groucho. He was a witness to the controversial craziness that was Erin Fleming, the woman who invaded Groucho's last years. In his book (which I highly recommended) Steve told the story in colorful, apparently-honest detail. You can order a copy of it from Amazon here or get it autographed by and from the author here.

And you can hear Steve discuss those years and his own colorful life today on Stu's Show, my favorite Internet Radio Station. Stu Shostak does his show live at 4 PM Pacific Time which is 7 PM on the East Coast…and you can probably figure out the time it's on where you are. It runs two hours with occasional overages and it's a lot of fun. Hear it live and free at the appointed hour at the Stu's Show website. Or download it later there for a measly 99 cents. Either way, I'm sure you're going to like what you hear and hear what you like.

Today on Stu's Show, your enthusiastic moderator Stu Shostak welcomes my buddy Vince Waldron, author of the best danged book there could ever be about the best danged sitcom ever, The Dick Van Dyke Show. Vince was on Stu's Show before but there was so much to talk about and they only got through about half past "It May Look Like a Walnut." Today, they resume their conversation.

Stu's Show is webcast live at 4 PM Wednesday afternoon. That's Pacific Time so if you're in the east, it's 7 PM and if you're in Kazakhstan, as so many fans of Stu's Show are, it's 6 AM the following morning. The show is supposed to run two hours but sometimes runs longer. You can listen in by going to the Stu's Show website at the proper time.

That's free. Shortly after the live webcast, each episode becomes available for downloading at the same place where the price is a measly 99 cents. While you're there, you might also want to buy Stu's previous episodes about my favorite situation comedy, including the one with Rose Marie and Larry Matthews, as well as Vince's earlier appearance.

Hey, what do you say we watch an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show? Yeah, I know you bought the DVD set but sometimes I embed just because I can. This is a complete one — complete with current commercials you'll have to sit through, though you can always do what I do, which is to minimize the window and try and solve an entire Sudoku puzzle while the ad plays.

I've selected "Obnoxious, Offensive, Egomaniac, Etc.," which is the one where the writers loaded a script with insults about their boss, Alan Brady, then accidentally sent it over to him without deleting the offending adjectives. The plot was reportedly based on a real-life incident where the writers on The Joey Bishop Show did a draft wherein they inserted their true feelings about Mr. Bishop and then had to scramble to get back a copy which wasn't supposed to have been sent to him. Here's what Carl Reiner and his merry band did with that premise…

Just Before Bedtime

Well, the site looks pretty much the way I want it to…in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. Internet Explorer is insisting on adding some extra padding in places where it shouldn't be so I'll try fiddling with things over the next few days.

While I was setting things up, I was listening to the New Year's Eve edition of Stu's Show. Stu Shostak and his lovely partner Jeanine Kasun hosted a mess of celebs into their home last night for a party and podcast. Among those heard on the six-hour extravaganza were Rose Marie, June Foray, Tony Dow, Randy West, Hank Garrett, Grace Fraga, Stanley Livingston, Frank Bank, Randal Malone, Butch Patrick…and even me. It was quite a show and Stu's decided to repeat it today at 1 PM Pacific Time. Just go to his website at the appointed hour to listen in and join the fun.

More Stu 4U

I have this friend named Stu Shostak. That's him above in a photo with Stan Freberg. Stu does many things. He does warm-ups for TV shows. He's a TV historian and archivist and he produces special features about old TV for DVD extras. He also has his own radio station — Shokus Internet Radio — which I plug often on this site. I have been known to trek out to his little studio in Chatsworth, California and guest on Stu's Show, which is the signature program for the station. Each week on Stu's Show, Stu interviews someone who has made great contributions to the teevee medium. Often, they're folks like Freberg, Shelley Berman, Chuck McCann, Pat Harrington, Bonnie Franklin, June Foray or Tom Kennedy. And then when he can't snag a biggie, he has me.

He's now done more than 170 of these two-hour broadcasts. In the past, you had to tune in to his station at specified times to hear them. That is no longer the case. He's just set up a website that will allow you to download mp3 files of many episodes. If you're going to pick one to sample, I would particularly recommend the Shelley Berman one which aired on 9/3/08…but scan the listings and see what grabs you, then grab it. If you're interested in cartoon voices — either the history of the art or how to get into the field — there are some superb episodes about that. There are also discussions about sitcoms, game shows, animation, etc.

At the moment, downloads are free but you're far too decent to take something that valuable and not leave something in return. So if you download a show or two, use Stu's donation link and upload him some cash. It's the right and proper thing to do.

And don't forget! You can still listen to Stu's Show live at its appointed hour on Wednesday afternoons. This Wednesday, his in-studio guest will by Wally Wingert, a talented gent whose voice is heard on dozens of cartoon shows, including The Garfield Show, where he speaks for the cat's owner Jon and gets directed by Yours Truly. Directing Wally Wingert: Easiest job I ever had. The only tough part is that I have to finish the sessions in time for him to run out to his other job, which is announcing for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. You can hear Wally talk about all this and more, this Wednesday on Stu's Show. I'll be listening if only to make sure he doesn't say anything which will cause me to fire him.

Vocal Boy Makes Good

My pal Joe Alaskey has written his autobiography. Joe's a little young for that but the book is a treasure for those of us interested in cartoons and especially cartoon voicing. One of most versatile talents in our field, Joe has been heard on dozens of animated shows including Rugrats and darn near everything funny the Warner Brothers studio has done in the last decade. Even while Mel Blanc was alive, Joe was (with Mel's blessing) taking over a number of his roles. In Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Mel did Bugs and Porky and several others but that was Joe you heard playing Yosemite Sam. Since Mel's passing, Joe has assumed other classic Blanc roles. When you hear Daffy Duck in anything new, you're probably hearing Joe…who even won an Emmy for the Duck Dodgers series. He also does a lot of original characters and once in a while, someone drags him in front of a camera to act or do impressions. Nobody does a better Gleason. In fact, if Gleason were still around, he wouldn't sound as much like himself as Joe does.

So consider this a plug for That's Still Not All, Folks, the autobiography of Joe Alaskey. It's full of great anecdotes about his life and the folks he's worked with…and there are even cartoons by Joe. There's gotta be something he can't do.
